This Mother’s Day is a special one for Sarah.
Sarah Omega, our communications officer in Eldoret, Kenya, is a fistula survivor and maternal health advocate. Raped at the age of 19, she endured a lengthy obstructed labor and gave birth to a stillborn baby boy. She also developed a fistula. Thinking treatment was impossible, she lived in pain and isolation for 12 years. But in 2007, she was treated by our partner surgeon Dr. Hillary Mabeya. That single surgery not only changed her life, it has changed the lives of hundreds of women in western Kenya. Sarah is an eloquent and powerful spokesperson for fistula patients. Through her advocacy and outreach in Kenya, Sarah has helped many other women get treatment.
