Madeline Sheron first learned about fistula after reading Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women and Girls Worldwide by Nicholas Kristof & Sheryl WuDunn. She was so inspired that she wanted to do something to help – she brought Half the Sky to her book club and then decided to put on an event in order to raise money for one woman’s surgery. Along with friends Polly Baney & Judy Kaplov, the three put on a luncheon and auction for friends last year that raised enough money for not one, but twelve surgeries! This year’s event was even bigger: 60 people attended and $20,000 was raised to help heal women with fistula.
When we asked Madeline what inspires her to support women with fistula, she said:
“I had a prolonged labor that ended in a C-section. Had I been born in Sub-Saharan
Africa or parts of Asia, I could have been one of those women. A number of my
friends also had C-sections. We were just lucky, and we need to pay that luck
forward. Many of our friends were grateful for the opportunity to have the chance.
We created an awareness of the issue – fistula – that few had heard about.”
A big thank you to Madeline Sheron and friends for their passion and support! Please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org if you are interested in hosting a fundraising event of your own.
