On December 12th, Fistula Foundation CEO Kate Grant participated in an event organized by Astellas Pharma EMEA, in advance of the Universal Health Coverage Forum in Tokyo, Japan. The event grew out of Universal Health Coverage day, and aims to rally the world’s nations to prioritize health care for all. UNFPA, the World Health Organization (WHO), and the Japanese government were among several organizations hosting the event.

Kate presented on obstetric fistula, and gave an overview of the work that Fistula Foundation does to help women suffering with the condition. She also highlighted our transformative nationwide treatment network with the power to end fistula in Kenya. This program was launched with the help of Astellas Pharma EMEA.

Following Kate’s presentation, Dr. Howard Friedman of UNFPA spoke. UNFPA has been a vanguard in the fight against fistula with their global campaign to end obstetric fistula. Dr. Friedman highlighted the campaign, and then praised Kate’s leadership and Fistula Foundation’s work as a leader in the battle against obstetric fistula.

He noted its innovation in outreach and effectiveness, including the Global Fistula Map, a collaborative effort between Fistula Foundation, UNFPA, and Direct Relief.

We are incredibly grateful to Dr. Friedman, Astellas, and the event organizers for helping to raise awareness about this terrible childbirth injury.
