Men in Kisii county have been urged to support their wives who are suffering from fistula to get treated.

Speaking on Tuesday in Kisii town, the Fistula Foundation Officer Everline Kwamboka noted that most men in Kisii ignore their wives when they develop the health challenge after birth.

Ms. Kwamboka further said that obsteric fistula is a curable disease and therefore urged women to go out for treatment.

“Most women fear the stigma that comes with the disease and therefore prefer to suffer in their homes with the problem. Their husbands also contribute to their affliction and it is a high time for men to support their spouses in order to encourage them to get treatment,” said the officer.

Ms. Kwamboka also said that obstetric fistula is caused by the delay in delivery whereby the mother strains and bursts the urethra and bladder which then causes uncontrolled stool and urine passage.

She said the Non-governmental Organisation has offered free treatment to 78 women since December 2014.
