Marketing Communications Writer
If you are a highly motivated, creative and skilled writer, the Fistula Foundation is your opportunity to play a key role in transforming women’s lives in poor countries around the world. You will join a small, dedicated staff in addressing the “hidden” problem of obstetric fistula, a childbirth injury that devastates the lives of one million women in developing countries. Your challenge will be to build on the Foundation’s solid track record and help the Foundation raise vital revenue that enables us to provide restorative surgery to women. You will contribute to this effort by working with the Foundation team to craft compelling major gift solicitations, foundation grant requests and dynamic online and direct mail solicitations, and other donor-focused communications. You’ll also help maintain and strengthen our website.
About Fistula Foundation:
An estimated one million women in Africa and Asia suffer from obstetric fistula, a debilitating childbirth injury that leaves a woman incontinent and, as a result, often abandoned by her husband and shunned by her community. The only cure is surgery, which we deliver through on-the-ground partners in more than 20 countries including Ethiopia and Bangladesh. Quite simply, these surgeries change women’s lives—and their families’ lives–forever.
We have the dynamism of a lean start-up team with the stability of a mature organization, including a $5M reserve. Our supporters love to share stories about how we’ve touched their lives, as seen in the 485 stories on GreatNonprofits.org. And we have 11 years of 4-star Charity Navigator ratings along with a consistent “A” from Charity Watch. We’ve earned the recognition of high-profile leaders, from two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, Nicholas Kristof, to Emmy-award winning Louis CK, who just won $50,000 for us on Jeopardy, to internationally renowned ethicist, Peter Singer. Additionally, we have earned critical support from global leader Johnson & Johnson.
This position will report to the Senior Director of Donor Relations, and will work in close collaboration with other members of the team based in San Jose, California.
The ideal candidate will have at least two years of work experience. He/she will have strong and versatile writing skills and will possess superior interpersonal and communication abilities. He/she will be a proven performer, a quick learner, and will be able to demonstrate a “get it done” work ethic; as a small, lean organization, every member of our team must be willing and able to pitch in with tasks large and small. He/she will also have excellent organizational skills and the ability to adapt to new conditions, assignments and deadlines; quick turnaround on key projects is essential for success. The ability to listen and to be inquisitive and eager to learn from other Foundation staff about our work and our partners in the field is vital.
A Bachelor’s degree is required for this position, as is integrity, humility, optimism, a sense of humor and a strong work ethic. Experience with or demonstrated interest in international poverty alleviation and/or the advancement of women is desirable, though not required. Experience writing fundraising related communication is also desirable, but not required.
The Marketing Communications Writer will be expected to:
• Develop major gift and foundation grant proposals that range from 10 to 20 pages in length, describing projects for fistula treatment.
• Craft outgoing donor communications including, but not limited to: print and electronic newsletters, e-mail, brochures, letters and social media posts.
• Draft personalized correspondence for select top donors.
• Draft interim and final grant reports, following formal guidelines provided by a Foundation donor.
• Produce error-free memos, reports and written content for use in print and online communications.
• Maintain and grow the Foundation’s database of patient and supporter stories and partner program highlights and identify new ways to utilize this content.
• Help maintain the Foundation’s website by working with the Communications team to keep content fresh, current and relevant.
• Provide additional general support to the Fistula Foundation team as needed.
