Uganda

Why Do We Work in Uganda?

Uganda's northern region has been tormented by one of Africa's most brutal rebellions, causing widespread insecurity and a huge refugee crisis. Against such a backdrop it is difficult for government, health care and the economy to function effectively. Such system failure is the root cause of fistula. The Fistula Foundation is supporting a respected Ugandan organization to help expand where more fistula treatment is critically needed.

What You Help Us Do In Uganda

We're helping fund:

  • Advocacy to more efficiently manage and prioritize maternal health
  • Improved referral links with local social support services and village women's groups for fistula patients before and after care
  • Comprehensive care services for fistula patients

Where:
8 identified districts in Northeastern Uganda

How much funding have we granted?
$50,000 in FY2011

Who's our partner?
The Association for the Re-Orientation and Rehabilitation of Teso Women for Development (also known as TERREWODE) who will coordinate with the Soroti Regional Referral Hospital in Eastern Uganda for treatment of fistula patients

How will this help women in Uganda?
Northeastern Uganda will have stronger maternal health resources. And local fistula patients will receive better and more comprehensive care and assistance before and after surgery (identification, referrals, arranging and paying for transportation, follow-up, counseling and assistance with re-integration).
