Why Do We Work in Somaliland?

Somaliland is a semi-autonomous state of Somalia which has been in state of political upheaval since 1991. It has some of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world. There is a great need to improve both access to and quality of obstetric and neonatal care.

How will this help women in Somaliland?
The Foundation funded construction of a brand new fistula repair facility at the Edna Adan Maternity and Teaching Hospital in Hargeysa, Somaliland, the first of its kind in the region. The Hospital, founded by Edna Adan, in 2002, is filling a desperate need women of Somaliland have for quality maternal care. The building of a new operating theater block, dedicated to fistula treatment, will significantly increase the capacity of Edna Adan to treat fistula patients.

It is envisioned that the National Borama Fistula Hospital will become the primary location in the region for training doctors and nurses in the care of women with obstetric fistulas. This will be in addition to providing free care for women with injuries from prolonged obstructed labor.
