Meet Our Champions

What motivates a person to become a champion of obstetric fistula? A book? A conversation with a friend? A documentary film? A voice inside your head whispering or perhaps shouting to you, "This is tragic. I have to do something."

Allow us to introduce you to a few of our mightiest champions. If you are already a donor, can you recall the inspiration behind your first donation? Perhaps you will see yourself in these personal stories. And if you are discovering this cause for the first time, welcome. Nothing would make us happier than for you to say to yourself, "I can do that, too."

When blogger extraordinaire Amy Oztan was invited to take on the "Lose to Win Challenge" from DietBet.com, she not only lost weight but also gained a donation to the Fistula Foundation — and raised awareness about the foundation from her popular "Selfish Mom" blog as well. Amy noted in her blog that her goal was twofold: to lose weight and "to help women in developing countries who are injured in childbirth get the surgery they need to be healthy and productive again". The Polland family have been helping for years. This is Allison during her medical school rotation in Ethiopia. "Every single woman in this photo is holding a baby on her back," shares Allison, "even the little girls holding my hands." Former marine officer Kit Brazier, his wife Lorraine and their faithful Golden Retriever, Rascal. One day, he hopes to completely fund a new medical clinic devoted to fistula treatment at the next most important region in Africa. Emily Achler, Ashley Gardiner and Sarah Scott, three young professionals, struck up a conversation during a coffee break. They are now doing amazing things in D.C. "We felt the need to help our sisters abroad," shares Sarah. "And together we decided to be a part of change through the Fistula Foundation's Circle of Friends program."
